About Us
We are a collection of characters with more years of experience than we care to admit in product development, branding, and retail. We came together as a group of individuals, but have become a team, working together and blending our talents. We are passionate about solving simple everyday problems, without constraints, walls, or limitations, to create new products that are innovative, simple and fun!
History
On the store shelf, dotz come across as fun, colorful, and—above all—simple. But the story of how they came to be is one of perseverance and vision. It is the story of Micah Maraia.
Micah’s career in design started early. As soon as he could hold a knife he was carving wood and stone sculptures in hopes of selling them at the local art shows. His career path has been diverse, but by 2000 he found his true calling as an industrial designer. He worked behind the scenes in both corporate and consulting settings to make the things people use every day work and look better. He worked on a large range of products from housewares and hand tools to super computers, but there was something missing: the one “big idea” that would address a problem that many people had but no one had solved. Like many creative types, Micah sought inspiration in his studio. There he found both an impenetrable tangle of cords and the inspiration that would change his life. Facing a knot of cords and wires he envisioned a simple, intuitive system to bring order to the chaos. That day dotz were born.
Micah approached the task of developing his idea into a product line much as any inventor does: with a lot of hard work. The end result was a finished product that does what no one else has thought of doing, in a way that makes people think, “Well, that was simple.” The fact that dotz products are easy to use right out of the box makes it seem as though they just “happened.” As Micah’s family and friends will tell you, it took a long three years of late nights and weekends for dotz to “just happen.”
Having developed an inspiration into a product, Micah set out to develop himself from a designer on a salary to an entrepreneur on the move. There followed many more long nights and weekends putting together his vision for a company that would bring the simplicity and elegance of dotz to the world. Along his journey he met some extraordinary people and learned more about marketing, patents and retail than he ever imagined. But he also knew when it was time to join with professionals with longer experience in retail and marketing, and together bring the dotz vision to completion. After an almost serendipitous introduction and an instant connection, Micah partnered with leading retail, merchandising, and business experts Doug Tenpas, Susan Peterson, and Brooks Douglass. Together they have become an unstoppable team.
